Was going to suggest you were reading too much into the indie reference but some suggestions on official forum that Doves will be headlining. How uninspiring! Hope these rumours are wrong. Still hoping for Bonnie Billy, Jeffrey Lewis, Field Music, Vetiver, First Aid Kit and the obligatory King Creosote and James Yorkston without whom GM would be unimaginable!

Introduction to last years programme---We've evolved into a four day event with three days of music---indie,psych,dance,americana and folk across five stages.
So i'm surprised people are shocked by indie being in the description--the only differance to last year is dance is dropped from the introduction.
Doves are a change but no less folk than SFA/Spiritualized-Pavement- Robert Plant.
Many festivals went under last year and no doubt many more will this year--Doves will add a large number of ticket sales and if a couple of bands away from the norm help keep the festival going its no bad thing.

but it's individuality that keeps a festival's financial head above water
what makes this year's line up (so far) any different to a bunch of other festivals?
homogeneous line ups just split ticket sales
anyhow - it's the same old argument as last year
and i'm fully aware of how boring i'm getting
but doves!?
for fuck's sake...

I'm with you on the question of Doves Rayrad. Odd choice, presumably designed to boost ticket sales but what a dull, uninspiring band - identikit northern indie. I know I don't have to watch 'em but they're taking up valuable headlining space that might otherwise have been Bonnie Billy, Fleet Foxes or maybe even Magazine - now that would have been an inspired choice! Anyways, plenty of time for lots of fab stuff to be announced. This time last year I hadn't come across Caribou, School of Language (which introduced me to the wonderful world of Field Music), Radio Luxembourg (now renamed apparently), Bowerbirds etc. Off to check out Wooden Shjips and She Keeps Bees now!

Pressed wrong button on above post.
Some over reaction to one band--i've been to every Green Man festival and have never seen all 3 headliners and in fact there have been headliners i really dislike but no problem, theres other stages and i haven't gone to the festival to sit in one place all day.
To be honest i'm not overly bothered whether Doves play or not it won't affect my weekend either way----but to say the line up is similar to other festivals is far from the mark,a pretty diverse mix already--and if band of the moment Fleet foxes are announced it will not turn the festival into Bestival.
We like you say had all the same discussions last year with SFA and Spiritualized and indie band The National but the atmosphere was as good as ever and even with homogeneous line ups splitting ticket sales it still sold out.
I'm sure over the coming weeks there will be something for everyone

Well said blackpumpkinhead, and on the other side of the coin, I was really looking forward to seeing Donovan the year he headlined but to this day it's one of the worst, most embarassing things I have ever seen. It will haunt me until the day I die...JAH RASTAFARI MON!!!. But I'd still go to the GMF despite that awful memory. One band doth not maketh a festival.

rayrad, I'm sorry. I didnt mean to bring it all back, you know you'll have a wonderful time at the Gm. Try and think about Donovan the next time you think of The Doves and it will help to ease your worried mind. Even the thought of 23 bongo drummers turning up at the jam session is better than Donovan (he invented The Beatles you know!)

Can I just add that the worse thing about Donovan (he invented Bob Dylan you know) that night was that he didn't even play his best song, Mountain (the top of the pops version, not the crappy studio version).

Yeah, I'm always happy to see a headliner who I love announced, but never all that bothered to see one I don't like, because you can always go and do something else for that hour.

They were jaw-droppingly awesome - a close second to the great King Creosote in my 2008 highlights.

yeah little wings and caribou at the same time gave me a big dilemma... i did get to see a bit of both though - not sure in which order - things were a little 'hazy' for me by then!
