Ok ... I'm pretty familiar with the top four acts on the main stage each day but most of the rest have escaped my attention thus far. Which acts do you reckon will surprise and delight the most? Listening recommendations for pre-festival reconnaissance would be very welcome

Well I guess it depends what you like - Green Man covers everything from extreme noise to quiet acoustic stuff.
At the noise end I'm searching out
Magik Markers Fuck Buttons Howlin Rain
and at the quieter end
Laura Marling Lou Rhodes Alela Diane
But I don't know a lot of the acts this year compared to previous ones so am looking forward to being pleasantly surprised.

Thanks for the tips krasnyi and seasonalbeast.
My roots are at the extreme noise end of things (I only found GM 'cos Robert Plant played last year), but I can't believe the quality of some of the music I've found by following recommendations here. I have enough CDs to keep me happy for the rest of my life but I just can't stop seeking out more great music :-)

The best rock type act playing is Black Mountain in my opinion, check them out if you haven't already.
Other than them i'm looking forward to:
Mary Hampton, Nina Nastasia, Alela Diane, O' Death, James Yorkston, Cath & Phil Tyler, North Sea Radio Orchestra, Richard Thompson, Devon Sproule, Damien Jurado, Pentangle, Laura Marlin, Iron and Wine.

I've been checking them out as they're on the bill for the Village Pump festival next week and I'm muchly impressed. James Yorkston, Richard Thompson, Damian Jurado and Iron & Wine are also 'must sees' for me so it seems we share some good taste

right who am i looking forward to seeing...... the accidental - wonderful featuring stephen from the memory band and sam from tunng so you get the idea the owl service - gorgeously leaf and leige type pastoralness (am i making words up here?) jon stammers - manchesters own nic drake essie jain - beautiful (a less shrill joanna newsom?) the peth - this should by all accounts be awesome - rhys ifans and selected super furries in psyche meltdown! Caribou - sublime psyche - gutted they're gonna clash with Pentangle - big decisions to be made! JY and KC obviously...... Barborossa - chemical campfires is a great album Moon Music Orchestra - for some Ronnie Lane stylings and good mates of Findlay Brown..... Sarah Lowes - sometime member of the Earlies yikes the list goes on.......getting rather excited by the whole prospect if you want to hear more check my myspace out: www.myspace.com/steviehdg - or just pop by and say hello....

This is how my weekend is panning out so far,but still working through myspace and cd's.
Friday. Truckers of Husk--didn't see them at Latitude but everyone who did raved about them. Agnostic mountain gospel choir-rowdy dark blues/bluegrass Sennen--album growing on me--varies between pretty pop and wall of noise Mogwai rock. O'death--foot stompin' gothic bluegrass Fuck Buttons---love the album, expecting these to be one of the weekends highlights for noise lovers. Cave singers--probably alt/country--not played the album enough at the moment but the single dancing on our graves is one of my favourite records of the year. Spiritualized--maybe not everyones choice but i'm still pinching myself that my favourite band are headlining Greenman--seen them countless times and never been disappointed.
Have just got the ox.eagle.lion.man/war on drugs/one littleplane albums and not really explored the green man cafe yet so i could squeeze in a couple more and i believe the feeling gloomy dj's are on friday night to finish off a fantastic first night line up.
Just listening to Sennen while i type this--they do sound majestic.
Sat/sun to follow

Black mountain - a highlight for me at glasto, but much more suited to hear as lots of people didn't seem to get it. Lou Rhodes - seen her several times as she never fails to move me. she'll break your heart mend it and melt all within a single song. and she's so angelic. Richard Thompson - very fun live.
everything else for me will be suck it and see random style, just the way i like it.

Was listening to Fight Like Apes on their myspace the other day, I'll think they're one to look out for.

Can I just big up Truckers of Husk again? Check out their myspace page - they're inviting people from Cardiff to get in touch to provide them with a choir for GM!

i've only done the friday so far
much myspacery to get through in the next week or so
but my tip for the opening day are burning leaves - as long as she can reproduce those breathy vocals without being drowned out by two hundred space cadets having visions on cider and trench-foot...
and my skip for the day - sorry rog... - is fight like apes - shouty, shouty, shouty - i am too old for all that - unless you're iggy pop - and they're not
cheers ray

Fight Like Apes sounded awful to my ears. It looks like they're replaced Grand Archives on the line-up, would have preferred something at least vaguely similar.
I like shouty music, but it's not really what I go to Green Man for.

i bet apes don't shout when they fight anyway
they probably just give you a really mean stare

At the risk of being shot down once again, I've also been quite taken with City Reverb and The Cave Singers.

Hmm, of the non-household names (not using a particularly scientific definition of that) ...
School of Language Radio Luxembourg North Sea Radio Orchestra The Owl Service Mary Hampton
Add that to Black Mountain, King Creosote, James Yorkston, Sennen (who sound just as lovely live as they do on record, by the way), Fuck Buttons, Richard Thomson, Howlin' Rain, Archie Bronson, Emmy The Great, Iron and Wine, The National, Caribou, Magik Markers, Nina Nastasia and of course the mighty Pentangle, as well as the impressive DJ lineup and inevitable gems everyone will stumble upon and it looks a pretty good 3 days. Wow, I'm excited now.
Regarding Devon Sproule, I saw her last week at Cambridge Folk Festival and I can recommend her but nothing to write home about. Speaking of Cambridge, going off topic, a trick was missed in not getting the Imagined Village- they'd sit perfectly with the rest of the line-up and were absolutely wonderful.

right
i've done the saturday
not a whole lot jumping out and dragging me to the foot of its stage
and why does almost everyone seem to be on domino?
devon sproule is definitely the day's highlight, and emmy the great will be fun too
but of the things i hadn't heard before, i am liking the following:
the saffron sect - bonkers garage psychedelia from canada - why are they on first!?
orange blossom special - a johhny cash tribute act - from the netherlands! just the description should be enough. but also good
tip of the day:
heather jones - grand dark americana in a kind of shivaree style type thing - seems to now be trading as h jones x
and skip of the day:
the swanton bombs - sound like they'd mug you in an alley behind tescos - and not in a good way
right - sunday...
cheers ray xx
