From the official website:
We're delighted that Richard Thompson will be making his first Green Man appearance this year - details to follow. And Howlin' Rain (featuring members of Comets On Fire and Sunburned Hand of the Man) have also just said yes.
Although Richard Thompson's back catalogue is huge, I really hope he plays 'down where the drunkards roam' just love that song, also Howlin Rain could be the surprise highlight of the festival if anyone witnessed Sunburned Hand of the Man in GM2006..... they will know exactly what i mean.

Hope it's Richard on his own or with Danny Thompson. I've seen him a few times and much prefer his solo sets to full-band sets where the subtelty tens to get lost. Good chance he'll do 'Drunkards', he's not averse to dipping way back into his back catalogue.

so i just took a listen to howlin' rain (gotta love that apostrophe...) on their my space page
this is a weird one
it's kind of ok - the singer sounds a little like steven stills
and they have a nice psychedelic drummer
but, you know, there are suddenly a lot of bands like this
who veer dangerously close to that tipping point
when all the cool west coast bands of the late 60s slipped over the egde of groovy and into that fiddly fretboard wandering that became metal in the 70s
they have song titles like "dancer at the end of time" and "calling lightening with a scythe"
that's the kind of thing ritchie blackmore calls his songs
picture the band in 'almost famous' with jason lee as the singer
then go and look at a howlin' rain video
it's the same band
go on
i dare you
hippies good
rock gods bad
it's important to remember this
cheers ray
also - i realise that i am now becoming the official whinger here
but i'm pleased about richard thompson - really i am

Thompson is good news, do you reckon he will be topping the Main Stage? I could see him headlining, yet if that was the case I'd have thought they would announce him as such (like with SFA.) All together now "...shove 'em in a babies....shove 'em in a babies..!"
I'll check out Howlin' Rain and get back to you...

Drive-by Truckers are just a great, great live band - I've seen them many times and they get better each time. Haven't seen the new line-up yet but I've no doubt they'll be a festival highlight (for me & Mrs Dirtyboy at least!) It was the announcement that they're playing that convinced me to grab tickets although with Iron & Wine, Beirut and Howlin' Rain on the bill, you can't lose!
