Anyone else particulary stoked about her inclusion?
The Ys Street Band EP is my CD of the year so far and her shrieking is enough to bring a tear.
Anyone interested should check out Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie.
Beautiful.
And cheers for the forum Chris

I am going to watch her, although my internal jury is still out on the Marge Simpson style vocals. Sometimes I really like it, other times I don't. A live performance will sort out my opinion on the matter.

Saw her play with an orchestra earlier this year - one of the best concerts I've ever been too. I would reccomend geting to know her work as I think it would be more rewarding when shes playing the longer songs.

I saw her in Manchester in January, and a few people were unhappy with the inclusion of the orchestra for when she played Ys in its entirity, which I couldn't understand. She was fantastic, and the second half where she played her earlier stuff was great also. I am pissed about the Tunng-Newsom clash, though. Same with the Battles-Plant one the next day.

I'm listening to Ys right now - I love the way she says "Meteorite".
I was debating with Stu the other day how you pronounce the album title. I reckons it "ys" as in "what are ys up to tonight?" It's a north-eastern thing (I'm from Hartlepool). See also "you's".
Stu reckons it's like "whys" but I'm not having it.

it's ee's - like ease
(hence the gag about the 'ys street band')
and the songs are so much better without the orchestra
i like van dyke parks
but this is his worst work ever - like a gallon of syrup poured over something that could have JUST coped with a hint of cinnamon
schmaltz-o-rama
she's still a marvel though

I am pissed about the Tunng-Newsom clash, though. Same with the Battles-Plant one the next day. If I remember rightly last year, not all Headlining bands start at the same time, bands are go on slighlty later in the folky dokey stage than the main stage, granted you won't catch full sets, but if you wanted to do half and half, I think it would be possible.....

Not for me...
I bought the CD and tried my best to like it but failed. I just do not get it.
I will be at another stage.

I've missed her everytime she's played, and so I HAVE to see her.
Couldn't stand her at first, but I'm completely obsessed now!

I was having conflicts listening to Joanna Newsome, couldn't quite accept her voice, didn't know whether to run away but kept coming back out of curiosity. Then a young performer here in town named Stratton Tingle told me he'd gone to see her in Nashville with Devendra Banhart and that she was awesome. He then said that he'd even learned to play one of her harp songs on guitar and proceeded to play it. Then I asked if he could sing like her too and he actually could and did! Stratton's band is called "Antebellum." www.myspace.com/ntbllm Hopefullly they'll stick together long enough to make a name for themselves. Don't know if they'll do Joanna Newsome covers tho.

I have tried and tried to get into Joanna Newson recently, there are a few odd moments when i think 'fantastic' but they are a few odd moments....... her music is gorgeous, her voice is just not consistent enough for me....... so it's Tunng for me, then the last few songs from John Power....... but those going to see Joanna i hope you enjoy it!

John Power is on on the Saturday Bri, it's Martin Stephenson on the Friday night against Tuung and Newsom.
